Why php bcmath extension should be enabled ?

Hello, This is my first try and during installation i've found that bcmath extension should be enabled. (while in PS this extension is not necessary) Is there any specific reason why it should be enabled ?

Thanks for the info. I believe there are several improvements has been made in 31bees using PHP BC Math functions. Will digging in more deeper :)
