Custom text area option chargeable when content is entered

Question

Posted

I am looking for guidance to allow me to implement a custom text area which depending on the product it is assigned to can have a different monetary value when the client enters content into it.

I am coming from a Joomla component which I have struggled to set up with this feature working correctly. The main issue I have had previously is some products have VAT and others don't. When the extra custom text box contains words I would need to have the price of the product increased by a fixed amount which doesn't change the amount of Tax paid.

Writing it out here I am thinking this may not be possible but if it is I would welcome the assistance. From playing with TB for a couple of weeks I am certainly won over partly because it is a dedicated shopping cart rather than a general purpose CMS :) Kind Regards,

Dave

How about handling VAT properly instead of a text field kludge?

First thing is, increasing the price under certain conditions is illegal in many countries. Even where it's legal, customers might develop a tendency to simply not enter these magic words. Better show the higher price, then lower that under the opposite set of conditions.

If this price distinction is actually VAT, one can handle it even better. Thirty bees features customer groups and the usual way is to create a group which is allowed to see and order for prices without that tax. Customers qualifying for VAT-less prices then log in to identify them selfs.

Hi Traumflug, thanks for your reply, To clarify the requirement... I haven't looked into whether there is a requirement for VAT to be charged I did raise it with the client so I am only working on the information provided.

I am aware of the groups feature which is one of the big plusses and why I am hoping that TB is suitable, effectively using groups will allow the B2B element to see prices which don't show VAT (until the checkout). But for the general public purchasing school/club uniforms etc will see the prices with VAT which is what they are used to.

An example of what I am wanting to achieve is: a garment that has a fixed price including VAT, also has an option for extra wording (name/nickname). This is where a text box would come in for the customer to enter the extra text required. When this box is filled in it would add an extra cost to the item.

Thinking outloud, if the extra text is added that would probably need to be listed as a separate product in the checkout page which would mean the figures add up correctly as a 0VAT rated item.

Again I am not sure if this is plausible or easily implementable.

@twincarb I do not know if I understand your request correctly.

I think Option 1 - purchase a module from PS with compatibility for TB - as an example, as in a jewelery business with engraving. Option 2 - duplicate the article - 1 article without text - 1 article with text and higher price, then create this article with Customization and deposit it as a mandatory field. Here I do not know if the number of characters for the text may also have other additional prices.

Not a perfect solution, but one that I've come to grips with so far. If necessary, activate articles for special customer groups only if they need them.

I see, this makes sense. To get an extra text field, go to Back office -> Catalog -> Products -> (select product) -> Customization. There you can get as many text fields as you like. Also file fields, where your customers can upload a file, e.g. a picture to be printed onto a t-shirt.

To get a specific price, "Combination" is the keyword. Can be set on the same product page. If I understand correctly, you'd want to have a combination with "no text" and "with text". Having such a combination you can go to the product's prices area and add a "Specific Price". For example $15.- more for the combination with text than the one without.

That's all a bit complicated to set up, but it should work out of the box. Looking at the demo products can help, e.g. the tin cup has a combination to feature two different colors.
