alwayspaws Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 I received email from someone and would like to know how they found my site, without asking them.
moy2010 Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 If you set Google Analytics, there's a dedicated section to the visitors' origin.
alwayspaws Posted July 21, 2017 Author Posted July 21, 2017 I still can't find it. They didn't register or sign up for a newsletter. Thanks!
Havouza Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 Or install lesleys free piwik module and you can use my piwik server. For free
alwayspaws Posted July 21, 2017 Author Posted July 21, 2017 I'd like to try that over the weekend. Thank you!

For free I installed @lesley's piwik and am using your server for free! Thanks so much, @Havouza Does anyone know how to see visitors from previous dates in google analytics or somewhere else, from before I installed Piwik?
alwayspaws Posted July 22, 2017 Author Posted July 22, 2017 I meant with Google Analytics just this once, please.
alwayspaws Posted July 22, 2017 Author Posted July 22, 2017 I do have one but don't know where to look, but I will try again to hunt it down. I'm not familiar with GA yet.
Havouza Posted July 22, 2017 Posted July 22, 2017 I never use it because I dont like to give info to Google. They get enough anyway
alwayspaws Posted July 22, 2017 Author Posted July 22, 2017 They have way too much info! I'm going to email the person and ask them.
alwayspaws Posted July 22, 2017 Author Posted July 22, 2017 @moy2010 said in Where can I find how someone found my website?: If you set Google Analytics, there's a dedicated section to the visitors' origin. Oh, I checked it and still can't find it. I searched by visitors and visits. I won't worry about it. I'll just contact the person who emailed me. Thanks @moy2010 :)
moy2010 Posted July 22, 2017 Posted July 22, 2017 Sorry, I didn't read that you wanted to know the origin from someone who contacted you by e-mail. Getting to know this is close to impossible; I can only think of asking him or, once he/she creates an account, check the I.P. and see if it matches to one from a previous visit.
alwayspaws Posted July 22, 2017 Author Posted July 22, 2017 I did not explain it right. I was contacted by someone and I just wanted to know how they found my website. Did they find it by Google or Yahoo or Facebook. Something like that. Thanks!
lesley Posted July 22, 2017 Posted July 22, 2017 The easiest way is going to ask them. There is no fool proof way. You can look at the different referral channels in google analytics, but google analytics does not let you track things on a per person level.
alwayspaws Posted July 24, 2017 Author Posted July 24, 2017 @lesley This person has emailed me three times now and will only say that her family has bought from me in the past and was happy with it. I tracked them down on FB because it's a charity with a large following. I point blank told her, politely (!) (I'm always polite!) that it's impossible that her family has bought from me because I'm a new site and I keep records of everything.
lesley Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Then I don't think there is any way of knowing really.
alwayspaws Posted July 25, 2017 Author Posted July 25, 2017 I gave up. She isn't a customer. She wants donations. She really came to the right person. lol!
