PayPal module: sometimes payments do not have an order or an order results in double payments

Some customers use cookie deletion tools or other security measures, such as opening payment links in a separate browser. The result is that some orders are not registered even though the payment went through, or that the payment is made twice.

Do others also have this problem?

The interesting thing is that all customers say they rarely have any problems in other stores using PayPal.

I've already discussed with datakick but I am wondering whether others have this problem, too.

datakick's suggestion would be to implement some sort of auto-login functionality:

  • Save information about customer + cart into PayPal metadata when preparing payment
  • Retrieve these information when redirected back from PayPal
  • Verify that current context matches the stored metadata, or update context if they do not

Hi, yes indeed,  we have this one time with one customer.  There was an older cart saved in tb, so i can construct this order with the total amount,  but it is not a nice situation  😞  We only see the Paypal payment notification and nothing about the order in tb.   The next difficulty is that tb does not give any payment details to Paypal (we do not see anything in the PP notification).

Why are you still using PayPal? Their fees are outrageous.

Look for a vPOS module from your bank or if not available get something like dedicated vPOS company with module for PS1.6.

My fees are 1.3%, PayPal's is 3%... crazy...

If you want to use it as 'a reputation enhancer' be sure that some well known vPOS provider will do the same for far less money.

The fees are always and everywhere painful, but directly with PayPal it is lower than through a third party.

Third party service providers only forward it through, so everything has its own fees (usually a fixed amount per payment transaction) plus the fees from PayPal, for example.

We in Germany don't have a 'better' provider for something like that.

Klarna is completely out of the question, the fact that customers have to give them full access for banking is unacceptable, we stopped offering Klarna many years ago.
I don't know enough about Adyen etc., but the fees aren't cheaper.

But let's stick to the topic here. These are the mistakes when buying where no order is created.

I think there are more cases, it just has to come up here in the forum....
I can definitely remember that this problem also existed with Prestashop & PayPal, I've read about it several times in the PS forum. No idea what the situation is with the current PS version.
But unfortunately I can also remember that a solution was never really found.

It's very hard to fix something that dev can't reproduce. At that point, it's just a guesswork.

If anyone can provide a reprosteps, I'd be happy to device fix. I could try to come with fix blindly. But you know, it's not optimal. We could spend hours to refactor the way this module handles the response, which is a dangerous task. It could introduce new bugs or issues, and there is no guarantee that that work would fix the problem at hand. So the motivation is not really there.
